It is difficult to use probability theory to precisely determine the best plays, since the probabilities of any given card begin present in the deck are indeterminate. However, computer simulations (as many as 25,000 plays for each hand combination) have been conducted to determine the optimum plays. Each correct play nets you only a small percentage gain. However, the effect of playing every hand optimally makes blackjack an even game. If you are not playing at a disadvantage, you can easily use good money management and betting strategies to make money. The Following pages provide a primary or basic strategy in two forms: </span><span class="style2">visually</span><span class="style1"> in the form of two charts - one for hard hands and one for soft (when you have an ace), and</span><span class="style2">textually</span><span class="style1"> in the form of a list of correct plays for each hand.You should </span><span class="style3">print</span><span class="style1"> both forms and </span><span class="style3">study</span><span class="style1"> them until they are well memorized. <text><span class="style2">ules of BlackJack</span><span class="style1">To win at Blackjack you must first learn the rules and how each one affects the game. Las Vegas has the best rules for the player in the world. Every casino in the world has its own set of rules which generally agree with those of other clubs in its area.Most casinos use two or four decks. Some use six or more. It is rare to find a single deck game any more, due to card counting. Regardless of the number of decks, your play will be basically the same.Your object is to beat the dealer. You do this by getting a higher hand than the dealer without exceeding 21. If you get a higher hand than the dealer, you are paid the amount of your bet (except for a BlackJack which pays 1.5 times your bet). I you get a more than 21, you "Bust". The dealer then takes your bet. If you get the same number as the dealer you "Push" and nothing happens to your bet. Blackjack is played at a table with a dealer and from one to seven players. The game begins when the player places his bet in the small betting square or circle before him on the table. The dealer shuffles the cards, has some player cut the cards, burns one card (places it at the bottom of the deck) and then deals two cards to each player and two cards to the dealer. The dealer's top card is turned up (the "Up Card") and his other card is left face down (the "Hole Card"). The player's cards are frequently dealt face up. This gives the dealer no advantage, as she must always play by fixed rules.By looking at his cards (two at this point) and the dealer's Up Card, the player determines her plays. The player may make one of four plays:</span><span class="style2">Hit</span><span class="style1"> - scratch the felt with your cards or you finger, asking the dealer for another card. Generally you will hit: 1) If the dealer's up card is 7, you hit until your hand sum's to 17. 2) If you hand is below 12 and the dealer's Up Card is not 4, 5 or 6.</span><span class="style2">Stand</span><span class="style1"> - place your original two cards under you bet, end your play and pass play to the player on your right or the dealer. Generally when you hand is 17 or greater, or when your hand is between 12 and 16 and the dealer's up card is from 3 to 6.</span><span class="style2">Double</span><span class="style1"> - Double your bet size and take only one (1) more card. You do this generally when your two card hand adds to 9, 10 or 11 and the dealer has an up card below your cards' sum (eg. you have a 10 and the dealer's up card is 9 or less).</span><span class="style2">Split</span><span class="style1"> - With two identical cards (e.g. two jacks or two threes, but not a jack and a queen although this is two ten cards), you split your two cards into two hands, put up another bet (for the split hand), receives a second card for each hand and play both hands. The exception is splitting two Aces where you can get only one additional card for each. Rules vary on splits, and you should ask if you may 1) split again after a split, 2) double down after a split. Both of these plays are to the player's advantage, but are not generally allowed.Seventeen (17) is the key number in BlackJack for determining play. If the player's hand exceeds 17 (and is less than 22) then she stands.</span><span class="style2">Your Hand's Value</span><span class="style1">Any </span><span class="style3">ten</span><span class="style1"> or </span><span class="style3">face card</span><span class="style1"> counts </span><span class="style3">ten</span><span class="style1">. </span><span class="style3">Aces</span><span class="style1"> count </span><span class="style3">one</span><span class="style1"> or </span><span class="style3">eleven</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style3">all other cards</span><span class="style1"> count their </span><span class="style3">number</span><span class="style1"> (e.g. 8 is 8, 6 is 6). A BlackJack occurs if dealer or a player gets an ace with a ten or face card as the </span><span class="style3">first two cards dealt</span><span class="style1">. The player receives 1.5 times her bet for a BlackJack. The dealer pays the player for a BlackJack immediately. </span><span class="style2">Soft Hands</span><span class="style1">A hand having an Ace that is not a BlackJack is called a "soft" hand because the ace can count either one or eleven. These frequently cause problems for beginners. I recommend the following method to eliminate confusion. Always count your Ace hand as Ace plus the sum of all the other cards you have. For exampleA-4 = Ace-Four A-2-A = Ace-ThreeA-6-A = Ace-SevenA-6-4 = Ace-Ten (or 21)A-6-5 = Ace-Eleven (12)If you have A2 to A6, if you do not double down, you always hit.If you have A7, you only hit if the dealer's Up Card is a 9 or a 10If you have A8 or A9 you never hit, you always stand.</span><span class="style2">Dealer's Play</span><span class="style1">Dealers must hit 16 or less and must stand on 17. Most casinos hit soft 17 (A-6), which is slightly to the player's disadvantage (.0019%). </span></text>

<text><span class="style2">etting Strategies</span><span class="style1">Next to playing correctly, controlling your money is the most important task you have.Five keys in money control are:1 - Avoiding the Gambler's fallacy2 - Walking away with your profits3 - Bank to Bet Ratio & Bet Size (how many bets you have)4 - Varying your Bet Size to </span><span class="style3">Increase</span><span class="style1"> your ProfitsThe </span><span class="style2">Gambler's Fallacy</span><span class="style1"> holds that when I lose a hand, my chances of winning the next hand increase, therefore I should increase my bet size after a loss. In fact, your chances of winning or losing any hand are not related to the previous hand (depending on the cards remaining in the deck and excepting for luck or runs - see the section on luck). Many people who fall prey to this fallacy apply the double-up system of betting. Following each loss they double their bet. This assures them that when they finally win a hand, no matter how long their losing strak lasts, they will end up with a profit equal to their first bet at the end of each string. This system would work except: 1) you don't have enough money to implement it properly, and 2) casinos set betting limits. For example, if a casino sets a minimum bet size of $2 and a maximum of $200, this limit allows only 6 doubles: $2, $4, $8, $16, $32, $64, $128. If you lose 7 in a row, your next bet can only be $200 (the maximum bet), which leaves you with a net loss of $54 for the string. In BlackJack, 7 losses in a row will occur about once in every 100 strings (where a string is a group of only wins or only losses). If 7 were the maximum number you could lose, you would still show a profit. Unfortunately, there is no limit to the number of bets in a row you can lose. Eight losses occur about once every 195 strings with a net loss for a $2 to $200 limit of $254. Nine losses occur about once ever 333 strings with a net loss of $454. Ten losses occur about once every 600 strings with a net loss of $654. Eleven losses occur about once every 1200 strings with a net loss of $854. After 1200 strings, you losses would total (1*$854) + (2*$654) + (4*454) + (6*$254) + (12*$54) or over $5000. Because your winnings amount to only $2 for each successful string (when you win a hand before exceeding the casino limit), and because there are only a total of 1200 strings (the maximum number of wins), the most you could win is about $2500 (depending on the number of BlackJacks). Therefore, after 1200 hands you could expect to end up with a net loss of over $2500 using this system. </span><span class="style2">I do not recommend it!!!</span><span class="style1">Almost all such betting strategies tha increase bet size following losses face this problem of large losses when they fail (due to betting limits or a lack of money to make the increasingly greater bets) against very small profits when they are successful. There are several optimizing betting strategies that I do recommend. These can considerably improve your profits. Some were used by such well-known professional gamblers such as Nick the Greek (not Jimmy, who was merely a tout) and LGH. However, you are going to have to send me a </span><span class="style3">shareware fee</span><span class="style1"> to obtain these strategies.</span><span class="style2">Walking Away with Your Profits</span><span class="style1">Many people, when gambling think: "I have $150. When I lose that, I will quit." This attitude assures you will lose. Another major problem is too small a </span><span class="style2">Bank to Bet</span><span class="style1"> ratio. With $150, they may bet $10 when they should be betting $3 (see </span><span class="style2">Bet Size</span><span class="style1"> below). Even a small downswing (turn of bad luck) can wipe them out and not allow them to recoup their losses. Given the way profits swing up and down, if you are playing a relatively even game and you hang around a table long enough, at some time you will be ahead. When you are ahead following an upswing (when you have been winning) and shortly after the next downswing starts (and they always do), that is the time to </span><span class="style2">walk away</span><span class="style1"> from the table </span><span class="style2">with your profits</span><span class="style1">. (See "On Luck" for more about this and the following sections).</span><span class="style2">Bank to Bet Ratio</span><span class="style1">Ideally, for every $1.00 bet you make, you have at least $500.00 in your bank (money allocated to play BlackJack) in case you lose. The major reason casinos make profits is because they have extremely deep pockets and can withstand losing streaks that empty the pockets of their customers. When the player has deep enough pockets, and is playing a relatively even game (BlackJack, Craps, Baccarat), he/she can hang around long enough for the upswings to consistently garner profits. This same method is practiced by profession stock investors and most professional gamblers.</span><span class="style2">Bet Size</span><span class="style1"> - To keep it simple, make sure you have at least 200 bets available. Thus, if you are betting $2, you should have $400 allocated for BlackJack. For $5 bets allocate $1000. Divide this bank into 7 sets of 30 bets. When you go to a casino, bring only 1 or at most 2 of these sets. If you lose an entire set (30 bets) during an evening, you are probably better off not playing any more, for your current luck is not good (see the On Luck section for more about bet sizes and sets). Play until you win or lose 30 bets. Do not quit, however, until you lose a few hands. If you follow the strategies outlined in this stack, you will lose 30 bets about once every eight times you play. </span><span class="style2">Varying your Bet size</span><span class="style1"> - When things are going your way, increase your bet sizes, but do not make drastic increases. In an even game, doubling you bet size when luck is running your way can significantly increase your overall profits. For those who are mathematically inclined, Allan N. Wilson's </span><span class="style4">The Casino Gambler's Guide</span><span class="style1"> (Harper & Row, NY., 1970) presents an excellent description of the probabilities involved in determining bank to bet ratios.</span></text>

As cards are played from the deck (however large), the probabilities associating with each play alter depending on which cards remain. Also, the probabilities of the dealer busting and the player obtaining a BlackJack (with 1.5 to 1 payoff) change as well. Therefore, both the play of the cards and betting strategies change as the count changes.There are as many counting strategies for BlackJack as there are inhabitants of Las Vegas. The one used by your two companions at the simulated table is extremely simple and powerful. When the count adequately favors the player, the simulated players are increasing their bet sizes. When the count is to the player's disadvantage, they decrease their bet sizes. Unfortunately, this methodology will get you barred from most casinos. By strictly following the basic strategy outlined in this stack, against a single deck your disadvantage is .0015%, agains 2 decks, .0037% and against four decks, .0052%. This disadvantage increases as the number of decks increases due to a reduction in the number of player blackjacks. For the hands played by your simulated companions, splitting is not available in this version. This costs the player approximately .0029%. Thus, the simulated hands are at a disadvantage of .0044% (1deck), .0056% (2 decks) and .0081% (4 decks). Never play Keno, Slots or any one of the other sucker games. You are just handing your money to the casinos at disadvantages of 20% or more.Aside from BlackJack (which is the only game in which you can have a statistical advantage), Craps (1.4% disadvantage can be reduced to .084 % if you always lay or take the odds), Baccarat (1.23 % disadvantage, or 1.06 % when betting for the banker with a 5 % tax), and Roulette (Double and Single 0, 5.26 % disadvantage; Single 0 only, 2.63 % disadvantage; Single 0 with En Bank - as in Europe, 1.315 % disadvantage) are the only casino games worth playing. Among these, Craps is perhaps the most subject to streaks (see the On Luck topic). Roulette is not usually very good in the United States because mose houses have both Single and Double Zeros. However, some casinos in Nevada have Single 0 wheels which offer only 2.6 % disadvantage. It is the classic game in Europe and is extremely popular due to the 1.3 % disadvantage. The greater the player disadvantage (house advantage), the greater the chance the house has of taking all the player's money. </span></text>

<text><span class="style2">n Luck</span><span class="style1">, or "I'd rather be lucky than smart."In any gaming situation, each play has a specific probability of success or failure for the player. For any given playing session, a specific set of events (choices or plays, wins, pushes and losses) occurs. If the results are favorable, we are "Lucky". If unfavorable, we are "Unlucky". Although most sessions will be neither extremely lucky or unlucky, some will be unbelievably lucky or unlucky. A key to the success of most professional gamblers and stock investors is to limit their losses but not their winnings. By dividing you bank into several smaller sets (e.g. 50 bets), you effectively limit your losses. Those who are more cautious may wish to divide their bank into 10 sets of 20 bets instead of 4 sets of 50. It will be somewhat unusual to lose even 20 bets during an evening's play and this effectively limits one's losses even more. Negatively, the smaller betting pool does not offer as much of an opportunity to "recoup" losses during a moderately "unlucky" session and means you will completely lose your working pool more frequently. Another option is to use a smaller working pool (20 bets) and bring two complete sets to the casino. If you lose one, take a break, watch some entertainment and then use the second one at a later time perhaps on a different table. When you are in one of those "lucky" sessions, play until your luck has run its course, In other words, if things are going well, </span><span class="style3">push your luck</span><span class="style1"> (I recommend here a doubling of bet sizes - in the complete version of this stack other methods for "pushing one's luck" are specified). I once saw an individual who was having an incredibly lucky night lose his shirt. This person, using a base bet of $25, within two hours was up over $2500 while playing very poorly. Within another hour this fool had lost all winnings and all the money with which he originally started. When you are up more than 10 bets, you should always be able to walk away from the table with at least a one or two bet profit. When the downswing comes make yourself walk away (the luckier you have been, the longer you wait to leave the table). Don't worry about the few lost dollars from the downswing. Don't try to attain a "record" win. Take your profits and walk. <text><span class="style2">DVANCED BETTING STRATEGIES</span><span class="style1">If you have not read the section on Betting Strategies (Basic), do so before you begin this.This section explicates three betting strategies and proven rules of thumb regarding when to apply them. The first thing to remember about any gambling in a casino is that increase your bet size when you are winning, not when you are losing. The only exception to this is if you are a BlackJack card counter and know the advantage has swung to you All three of the methods described here are used when you are winning. The last two are dependent on streaks of wins, so be sure to read the guidelines about streaks below. The probabilist skeptics among you can read the subsection </span><span class="style3">On Luck</span><span class="style1"> or watch (talk with) the many professional gamblers who use and have used these methods during the history of the game. Note that the strategies outlined here do not strictly follow the suggestions in the Basic Betting Strategies section.</span><span class="style2">METHOD 1 - PLAY THE SWINGS</span><span class="style1"> This is the classic gambling method used by such as Nick the Greek, LGH and most other renowned professional gamblers. Also used by stock market gamblers. During any given gambling session in a relatively even game there will be times when "luck" is swinging your way and times when it is not. The method is quite simple and amounts to limiting your losses but not limiting your gains. When things are going poorly, either keep playing until they improve (never lose more than 2 sets in one night - where a set is perhaps 10% of your total bank.) or quit playing for that day/night, relax and watch the entertainment. When things begin to swing your way, then pay close attention to the flow of profits. When you are ahead following an upswing (when you have been winning) and sometime after the next downswing begins is the time to walk away from the table with your profits. </span><span class="style2">Guidelines for applying METHOD 1</span><span class="style1"> - If you lose one betting set quickly, things may be extremely streaky. You might risk another set (preferably at a different table for purely psychological reasons). However, if things continue negatively, I suggest packing it up.When things swing your way and you are up several bets consider the following guidelines:If you are up 20 bets, you should walk away with at least 10 - this means you leave only 10 or 15 bets (based on your current bet size) on the table and put the rest away somewhere. When you are winning a series of bets in a row, you alternate between putting your winnings in your bank and leaving them up (doubling your bet or parlaying). For example, if you win 8 in a row, your bet sizes in order will be (we will always begin with a bet size of $2) 2, 2, 4, 4, 8, 8, 16, 16. Over these 8 bets, you will have bet $60 instead of $16 (if you were flat betting - 2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2). If you lost the ninth hand, your net profit over the series would be $28 instead of $14 (flat bet) . If you didn't lose until the 10th hand (win streak of nine), that profit would be $60 instead of $16. <text><span class="style2">HE Hi-Lo COUNT STRATEGYFacts Behind the Strategy</span><span class="style1">Each deck of cards contains four suits (clubs, spades, diamonds & hearts) of 13 cards each (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K,A). As the deck is dealt, the greater the proportion of high cards remaining in the deck (particularly 10s), the better conditions are for the player. This occurs because when a disproportional number of high cards remain in a deck:1. more Blackjacks occur (which pay the player at 3:2 odds),2. there is a greater chance of obtaining a "winning" hand following a double down (when you draw a 10 to a 9, 10 or 11, your total of 19 to 21 will win more often than not), and3. there is a greater chance of the dealer drawing a bust hand when she hits 12 to 16.Each of the preceding is beneficial for the player.When there is a disproportional number of small cards (2,3,4,5,6) remaining in the deck, the advantage swings to the dealer because all three of the factors above occur less frequently.A key element in determining profits is the number of BlackJacks a player receives. You will get a BlackJack about once every twenty hands. Removing one 2 from a deck causes the player to get 0.19% more BlackJacks (the card count is positive). Removing one ace reduces the number of BlackJacks by 22.0% (the counting of aces is explained in version 2.0). The strategy explained here is based on over one billion simulated hands.In 1961, Dr. Edward Thorpe released his book </span><span class="style4">Beat the Dealer</span><span class="style1">. Although accurate and profitable if applied correctly, his counting strategies were so complicated that they proved infeasible for most humans. Here we use an extremely simple but powerful counting strategy, which, if correctly applied, provides the player with a percentage advantage ranging from 1 to 5 percent depending on card counts and betting strategy. Proper money management and betting can increase these percentages significantly. Improper money management and betting will kill you as it does most players.</span><span class="style6">THE COUNTING STRATEGY</span><span class="style1"></span><span class="style2">The Raw Count</span><span class="style1">The Count begins at 0 when all 52 (104, 208, 312) cards are present in a deck. As each card appears (the dealer's hole card cannot be counted until it is turned up), if the card is a </span><span class="style3">2,3,4,5 or 6</span><span class="style1"> subtract 1 from the raw count. If the card shown is a </span><span class="style3">9,10,J,Q or K</span><span class="style1"> add 1 to the raw count. Thus, if the first 8 cards shown from a deck were 5, 6, 8, 7, 10, your running count would go 5 (-1), 6 (-2), 8 (-2), 7 (-2), 10 (-1). The cards 7 and 8 are not counted because they do not inluence the player's advantage substantially. Aces also are not counted here (except in the Advanced version 2.0). When there is an excess of Aces remaining in the deck, the dealer will bust less often, but the player will receive a greater number of BlackJacks. Therefore, an excess of Aces is considerably to your advantage. Version 2.0 will explain how the play of many hands alters depending on the count.One good way to practice the count is to take a deck of cards and deal the cards out face up. When the last card is dealt, your count should be zero. Practice this until you consistently obtain a zero. In the "Practice Hands" (Table of Contents) is a screen showing possible combinations of two cards. This makes you accustomed to counting in pairs which is the way you frequently see cards in a casino. Print this screen and practice the count using it also. </span><span class="style2">The Standard Count</span><span class="style1">Unfortunately, a simple running count only accurately describes the actual proportion of high and low cards remaining when exactly 13 cards (one complete suit) remains in the deck. Under that circumstance, if the raw count is +2, there are two extra high cards for that 13. In order to standardize the count so that you can make playing and betting decisions remain the same no matter what the number of cards remaining, you must estimate how many cards remain in the deck to the nearest quarter deck. Your estimate must be reasonably accurate to the quarter of a deck (remember 4 suits in each deck). Thus you must divide the raw count by the number of quarter decks remaining to arrive at the standard count used to determine play and bets. For example, if you are playing with 2 decks (104 cards), the raw count is + 8 and approximately 5 quarter decks (65 cards) remain, the standard count equals 8/5 = + 1.6. This means that for each 13 cards remaining, there is an extra 1.6 high cards. This is a beneficial case for the player. Don't attempt to actually count the cards remaining, simply estimate the remainder to the quarter. Purchasing a few decks of cards and practicing your estimates is extremely useful. Note that the way cards are shown in a dealer's shoe or hand are consistent. This increases the accuracy of your estimates. You should practice counting and estimating the number of cards remaining with actual cards before trying it in the simulation. To see the raw count - click on the "Raw Card Count =" button. The other players will make their bets according to the standard count at the beginning of the deal. Every time the dealer shuffles the deck, the count returns to zero. The "Your Choices" button allows you to see the number of cards left and the standard count. You can change your bet size to any amount desire by clicking on your bet size button.</span><span class="style2">How to Bet Using the Hi-Lo Count Strategy</span><span class="style1">The simulated players' betting strategy is to bet 1 unit when the standard count is less than -0.5, 2 units when the standard count is between - .5 and + .5 and 4 units when the standard count is greater than + .5. This betting strategy is appropriate for you also. <text><span class="style2">heory Versus Practice</span><span class="style1">A strict theoretician would argue that this method will not work because each play is independent of previous plays (excepting for changes in the remaining cards). Practice involves more than mere theory, however, and below are </span><span class="style3">three reasons</span><span class="style1"> to follow this practice. </span><span class="style3">First</span><span class="style1"> is </span><span class="style2">mental attitude</span><span class="style1">. Knowing that you have limited your losses if your luck had continued bad improves a your attitude. You should not play when your attitude is bad, for you will tend to make more mistakes and particularly incorrect decisions regarding bet size.</span><span class="style3">Second</span><span class="style1">, a session involves both the set of occurrences for the players and that for the dealer. If the dealer happens to receive good cards, the player's winnings will be reduced. One aspect of this is cheating by casinos. Most types of cheating a BlackJack dealer might use are difficult to detect. Although casinos may not do this often, I personally was privy to two examples during my time in Las Vegas. So walk away when your "Luck" is bad.</span><span class="style3">Third</span><span class="style1"> is the phenomenon of clustering or runs. Runs theory is an interesting area in statistics and a real phenomenon. Studies over extended plays in Roulette, Craps and BlackJack clearly show that wins and losses tend to "streak" (Numerous records are available - see also my article "The Unicorn, The Normal Curve and Other Improbable Creatures" for examples of clustering, </span><span class="style4">Psychological Bulletin</span><span class="style1">, 105:1). This clustering phenomenon occurs in all fields (see Buckminister Fuller's </span><span class="style4">Synchroneity</span><span class="style1">) and in fact was the reason Karl Pearson developed the Chi Square Goodness of Fit test. He had an argument with a more structured thinker over whether his clerical person had lied, made a mistake or actually experienced an anomalous set of dice rolls.
